New Delhi: Representatives of agitating students at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University said on Monday that they will not end the stir until university announces the date of union polls.
According to an official order, the University earlier in the day ordered that students' union elections be held within 15 days of the approval of the union's constitution and revoked suspension and show-cause notices issued to students during the ongoing protest.
“The Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union Election will be held 15 days after the date of approval of the constitution of the students’ union of Jamia Millia Islamia,” the order stated.
However, the announcement failed to end the agitation, with protesting students alleging that the order did not provide a definite timeline for the approval of the constitution or the conduct of elections.
The students’ union was dissolved by the university administration in 2006, and the announcement marks a significant development in the long-standing demand for the restoration of elected student representation at the university.
The developments came after days of campus demonstrations and a hunger strike, with students pressing the university to restore the elected students’ union and provide a clear timeline for the electoral process.
Security has also been beefed up outside the University taking into consideration the recent developments.
