New York: Award-winning musician Lil Nas X has spoken candidly about his mental health journey, revealing that he spent several months in rehabilitation and is now receiving ongoing treatment for bipolar disorder.
In a nearly three-minute video posted on Instagram, the artist, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, reflected on his recovery and the progress he has made since entering a court-approved mental health programme earlier this year.
The singer said working with a therapist and psychiatrist has helped him better understand and manage his condition. He also admitted that he had suspected he was living with bipolar disorder for several years but struggled to accept the diagnosis because of concerns about medication and public perception.
"I'm doing much better," the 27-year-old said, adding that he now feels more positive, more creative and less fearful than before.
The update comes months after a highly publicised incident in Los Angeles that resulted in criminal charges. A court later allowed the musician to enter a mental health diversion programme after determining that the incident was linked to his diagnosed condition. Under the programme, the charges can be dismissed if he successfully completes treatment and complies with legal requirements over a two-year period.
Mental health professionals describe bipolar disorder as a condition characterised by significant shifts in mood, energy and activity levels, ranging from periods of elevated mood and increased energy to episodes of depression.
Despite the challenges of the past year, Lil Nas X said he has returned to creating music and is preparing to release new material.
The artist also thanked fans for their continued support, saying his goal is to keep making them proud while focusing on his own personal growth and wellbeing.
Lil Nas X rose to global fame with the chart-topping hit "Old Town Road", which spent a record 19 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him two Grammy Awards. He later expanded his success with critically acclaimed releases including "Montero (Call Me by Your Name)" and "Industry Baby".
His latest update has drawn attention not only for its personal honesty but also for its role in helping normalise conversations around mental health, diagnosis and treatment in the entertainment industry.
