Agartala: The Tripura government has begun the process of identifying land for a proposed medical college in South Tripura district, a project expected to expand healthcare education infrastructure in the northeastern state.
A high-level team led by Welfare of Minorities Minister Sukla Charan Noatia visited Santirbazar on Monday and inspected two locations — Debdaru and Kalsi under the Jolaibari RD Block — as part of the site selection exercise.
According to Welfare of Minorities Department Secretary Nirmal Adhikari, the district administration will first assess the proposed sites before forwarding recommendations to a state-level committee headed by the chief secretary. If approved, the proposal will then be sent to the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs for final clearance.
Noatia said the proposed institution is planned under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), a scheme implemented by the Welfare of Minorities Department. He added that he had recently discussed the project with Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who expressed support for establishing a medical college in the state.
Officials said the Ministry of Minority Affairs is expected to fund the project, estimated to cost around Rs 250 crore. Once established, the medical college will be operated by Tripura's Health Department.
Tripura currently has three medical colleges. The proposed institution would become the state's fourth medical college and is expected to strengthen medical education and healthcare services in the region.
