New Delhi: Vice President (VP) of India C P Radhakrishnan, in a post on X, described the Emergency as one of the darkest chapters of Indian history. The vice president also paid tributes to everyone who stood in defence of democracy during the same.
The vice president stated that the Emergency stands as a solemn reminder of a time when constitutional values were severely tested, civil liberties were suspended and the freedom of expression was curtailed.
The VP further called on everyone to see the Constitution as a guiding light and build an India rooted in the values of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
Since 2025, the Modi government has been observing the anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas(Constitution Murder Day).

The Emergency stands as…
India was placed under a state of Emergency from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977 under Article 352 of the Constitution. The Emergency gave overriding powers to the executive, bringing state authority under central control.
Since 2025, the Modi government has been observing the anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas(Constitution Murder Day).
