New Delhi: India will convene the Monsoon Session of Parliament from July 20 to August 13, a politically significant sitting expected to witness heated debates on a range of national issues, including the alleged theft of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple, the implementation of the VB GRAM G Act, and several other matters likely to dominate the government's legislative agenda.
The session also comes at a time when the ruling BJP has strengthened its political position following recent Assembly election victories, while Parliament's changing political equations are expected to shape key discussions.
The political fallout of the rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT) is also expected to play out during the session.
A decision by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on the demands of 20 TMC MPs and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs seeking recognition as separate groups is still awaited.
In the Rajya Sabha, the ruling NDA has further strengthened its position after newly elected and re-elected members took oath.
Three rebel TMC MPs from the Upper House have resigned, and the upcoming bypolls are expected to further improve the BJP-led NDA's numbers in the Rajya Sabha.
In a post on X, Rijiju said that President Droupadi Murmu has summoned both Houses of Parliament for the Monsoon Session, on the government's recommendation.
"The Session will commence on July 20, 2026, and continue till August 13, 2026, for meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of national importance," he said.
The previous session ended on a disappointing note for the BJP-led NDA after a Constitution Amendment Bill seeking to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures from 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats was defeated in the Lower House.
The government is now reportedly redrafting the Bill and is considering increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats across all states uniformly by 50 per cent. The issue of population-linked delimitation has remained a major concern for several southern states.
