Saharanpur: At least 14 women workers were hospitalised after an ammonia gas leak incident at a meat processing factory here on Tuesday, police said.
The incident occurred at the ALM factory in the Haroda area under the Gagalhedi police station area.
The affected workers complained of breathing difficulty and dizziness while working, following which they were rushed to a nearby private hospital.
Station House Officer (Gagalhedi) )(SHO) Dharmendra Kumar said four women, whose condition was stated to be serious, were admitted to the ICU, while the remaining 10 were shifted to the general ward after receiving primary treatment.
The SHO also said that no complaint had been received by the police in connection with the incident so far.
The packaging unit was shut immediately after the gas leak, he said.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar) Subodh Kumar, Circle Officer (Sadar) Vijay Pratap and Chief Fire Officer Pratap Singh visited the site and inspected the unit.
Officials said technical experts were investigating the cause of the ammonia leak, while the administration was also examining whether prescribed safety norms were being followed at the factory.
The factory is owned by former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Haji Fazlur Rahman. Rahman represented the Saharanpur Lok Sabha constituency after winning the 2019 general election and had joined the Samajwadi Party in 2024.
