New Delhi: The chants grew louder and the crowd thicker at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday as fresh groups of protesters from across the country poured into the protest site, many after overnight journeys by bus and train.
Two days after the 'Chalo Sansad' march, the sit-in continued to draw new participants, many walking into the protest site with backpacks and rolled-up banners after travelling through the night. Volunteers directed them towards seating areas and distributed drinking water and food packets as more groups joined the gathering.
In a significant development, Union Minister J P Nadda has stated that India government is ready to discuss the issue of paper leaks in the forum of the Parliament. The remarks came during Nadda's press conference amid widespread protests against the alleged irregularities in the conduct of examinations such as NEET-UG. The Minister also hit out at Rahul Gandhi, saying that the latter is trying to gain political mileage out of the situation. Nadda remarked that students' issues should not be politicised.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi stated that everyone who assaulted students must be held accountable and that Prime Minister Modi should have decency to apologise to students for what has been done.

The Mumbai Police have registered 13 FIRs since July 18 in connection with the ongoing protests on charges of unlawful assembly and violation of prohibitory orders, booking 400 people, officials said on Wednesday.

Ready for talks; meet at Jantar Mantar or neutral venue: CJP
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Wednesday said it is ready to hold talks with the government to resolve the ongoing agitation over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, but insisted that the discussions should take place at a neutral venue instead of a minister's residence.
Addressing a press briefing at the protest site, CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said police informed the outfit on Wednesday morning that Union Minister JP Nadda wanted to hold discussions and had invited them to his residence.
"We refused to go to anyone's house or office. The people's court is here. Ministers should come among the people. If they want to talk, the talks should be held at Jantar Mantar," he said.
Das, however, said the movement remained open to dialogue and was willing to consider a neutral venue near the protest site if there were security concerns.
"We are educated people. If there are security concerns at Jantar Mantar, we can meet at a neutral place nearby. We have always said we are ready for talks. It would be good if the issue is resolved through dialogue," he said.

'No legal action on CJP protesters': Sonam Wangchuk sets condition for ending hunger strike
Sonam Wangchuk has written a letter to Union Ministers J P Nadda and Jitendra Singh conveying his demands for ending the hunger strike that is on its 25th day on Wednesday.
Wangchuk stated that there should be no legal action taken against the protesters for participating in the 'Chalo Sansad' March on July 20. Wangchuk penned that he would end his fast if he is given such an assurance by the India government. The letter has been posted to the official X account of Wangchuk.

Opposition MPs urge Wangchuk to end fast
Assuring Sonam Wangchuk that his message had resonated across the country and would now be raised in Parliament, a delegation of opposition MPs urged the activist to end his indefinite hunger strike that entered its 25th day on Wednesday over alleged examination irregularities.
The delegation, which included Congress MP Vivek Tankha, TMC MP Sagarika Ghose and CPI(M) MP John Brittas, met Wangchuk and his wife Gitanjali J Angmo at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.
They appealed to the activist to withdraw his indefinite fast, saying the struggle for a fair and transparent examination system had become a national cause.

Opposition MPs to meet Wangchuk
A delegation of opposition MPs will visit Sonam Wangchuk at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital to persuade him to end his 25-day fast, and assure him that issues relating to the alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and accountability in the education sector will be raised in Parliament, sources said on Tuesday.
The delegation will urge the activist, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the last 25 days, to end his fast after assuring him that the Opposition will take up the matter inside Parliament, the sources said.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas will be among those who meet Wangchuk, according to the sources. - PTI -

Kejriwal slams closure of metro stations, says youth will find ways to join protest
Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said young protesters "will find a way" to join the agitation even if all the metro stations are shutdown.
Addressing a joint press conference with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Kejriwal criticised the closure of several Metro stations, saying such measures would only strengthen the protests.
"Closing the metro stations is wrong. The more the government tries to stop students and protesters, the more the movement will grow. Even if you close all the metro stations, they will walk. These are young people. It will be good for the government to listen to these young protesters," he said.

'Don't waste our time', SC declines urgent listing of plea related to police action against students
The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined a request for urgent listing of a plea challenging the police action against students during the Cockroach Janta Party-led protest march in Delhi.
The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
"I have the videos as well regarding police brutality… If it can be listed tomorrow (Thursday)… students are there," the lawyer said.
He said that students had allegedly been subjected to police brutality during the protest and said the petition contained three prayers.
The CJI declined the request and made it clear that the bench was not inclined to examine video footage at the mentioning stage.
"We are not interested in videos, we don't have time to watch… We don't want to watch videos," the CJI said.
When the counsel reiterated that students had been beaten up and again referred to the video evidence, the CJI said, "Don't waste our time. We don't want to watch any videos." - PTI -
CJP vows to continue stir until Pradhan's resignation
CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said the agitation would continue until Pradhan resigns.
"We will not leave this spot until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. July 20 was a milestone moment in India's political history, especially in post-Independence India. The youth won't stay quiet anymore," he said.
Late Tuesday night, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke issued a clarification that the movement had not called for any gathering anywhere other than Jantar Mantar.

Delhi Metro closes 16 stations due to 'security reasons'
Sixteen Delhi Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Mandi House, ITO and Khan Market, were closed on Wednesday morning due to security reasons, the DMRC said.
"Due to security reasons, Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhamba Road, Supreme Court, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh and Shivaji Stadium metro stations have been closed till further instructions, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a post on X.
The interchange facility remains available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat, it said.

Govt tightens security in Delhi, deploys 20 additional CRPF companies
The Union Government has ordered deployment of 20 additional companies of the CRPF in Delhi to strengthen security measures in view of the CJP protests and demonstrations by various political parties, officials said on Wednesday.
The forces, all drawn from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), are being airlifted from West Bengal after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered their immediate deployment in the national capital on Tuesday night.
A total of 20 CRPF companies are being airlifted from Kolkata to be deployed in Delhi to strengthen the law and order in view of the CJP protests, demonstrations by various political parties and the ongoing Parliament session, official sources in the security establishment told PTI.
Multiple instances of violent clashes during the latest protests have necessitated this immediate deployment, they said.
About 30 companies of the CRPF and its specialised anti-riots unit Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been provided by the Centre to the Delhi Police to beef up security measures in view of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) protest and the Monsoon session of the Parliament that began on July 20.

TVK demands scrapping NEET
Tamil Nadu's ruling TVK on Tuesday said it was not merely opposed to irregularities in NEET but wanted the medical entrance examination scrapped altogether.It also demanded that states be given full powers over matters relating to medical education.
Amid student protests over NEET in Delhi, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam said its "uncompromising and firm stand" was that the national-level entrance test for medical aspirants should be abolished.
Targeting the main opposition DMK without naming it, the TVK said it would never indulge in the "fraudulent politics" of deceiving people for votes by making false promises to "scrap NEET ourselves."
The DMK had, in the run-up to the 2021 Assembly elections, promised to scrap NEET after coming to power.
In a statement issued here, the TVK called for shifting education from the Concurrent List to the State List of the Constitution as part of the solution to the issue. -

Tharoor visits protesters at Jantar Mantar, asks govt to be accountable
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday visited Jantar Mantar and interacted with several students and expressed solidarity with them.
"I wanted to stand in solidarity with the students who are protesting here, so I've come to see them. I think it's a democratic right to protest. It's a non-violent protest. No one is trying to do anything that is against the law. So I don't understand why the government is behaving with such insensitivity," the MP from Thiruvananthapuram said.The "brutal" lathicharge, the "horrendous" behaviour of the police and today the physical dragging away of the LoP, all of this has caused a lot of dismay to law-abiding citizens of this country, Tharoor said.
"This is not how we expect our government to deal with protests, with dissidents, with people who are demanding justice. These young students after all they worked hard for their exams, they studied hard and they were betrayed by the system. They were betrayed by the government that runs the system and they have every right to protest," he asserted.
The government should be accountable, he said.
"The government cannot conceal its lack of accountability behind the police action and that too very brutal police action," Tharoor said.
Interacting with injured protesters at Jantar Mantar, he said, "We really care for you, will try to raise your concerns in Parliament."

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan asserted on Tuesday that the government is committed to discussing issues related to the NEET and addressing every genuine concern of youngsters on the floor of Parliament.
Pradhan also slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for staging a dharna outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence and accused him of exploiting students as "political tools" to "manufacture" disruption during the Monsoon session of Parliament.
"Our government remains 100 pc committed to discussing NEET and addressing every genuine concern of our youth on the floor of the House. The students of India deserve far better than being treated as props in a political campaign. They deserve certainty over chaos, solutions over slogans and responsibility over disruption.

'Our full solidarity': TMC chief Mamata slams police action at Delhi protests, backs Congress' stir
Calling the police action at the protests in Delhi over NEET paper leak unacceptable, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday night said her party supports the sit-in demonstration by the opposition in the national capital.
Earlier in the day, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and several other senior leaders sat on a dharna outside the prime minister's residence in Delhi, demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation over the police action against students protesting the NEET paper leak.
"The police atrocities on our youth in Delhi is unacceptable. Shame on the Union government. The All India Trinamool Congress fully supports the sit-down protest by the Opposition today near Akbar Road. Our full solidarity," Banerjee said in a social media post.
"There were also police atrocities in Kolkata all through last night. BJP goons did all they could to disrupt preparations for our Martyrs' Day programme. They arrived on motorcycle squads, destroyed signage, vandalised the stage and deliberately cut microphone wires. Many youth were threatened and injured by these goons," she alleged.

Delhi police file six FIRs over July 20 Chalo Sansad march
Delhi Police has registered six FIRs so far in connection with the alleged violence, vandalism and other incidents during the "Chalo Sansad" march organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and farmers' groups on July 20.
Police are likely to probe a "larger and criminal conspiracy" behind the entire matter, police sources said.
The cases were registered at Parliament Street, Connaught Place and other police stations, and invoke multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, they said.
One FIR was lodged in connection with the violence and stone-pelting near Regal Cinema at Connaught Place, while separate cases relate to unlawful assembly, unauthorised flying of a drone during the Parliament session and an alleged conspiracy behind the violence, a police source said.
FIRs were also filed in connection with assault, taking the law into one's own hands and other related offences, he said.
