Palakkad, Kerala: A tourist from Tamil Nadu was rescued while rescue teams continued efforts to save a woman after the two were swept away by strong currents at Palakkuzhi waterfall in Kerala's Palakkad district on Sunday, officials said.
Officials at the Vadakkencherry Fire and Rescue Services station said they received an alert on Sunday afternoon that a young man and a woman had been swept away at the waterfall in Kizhakkenchery. Rescue personnel immediately rushed to the spot and launched an operation.
The man, who was swept onto rocks and sustained minor injuries, was rescued using ropes, officials said.
The woman, who also landed on a rocky stretch downstream, has been located. Rescue teams are working to reach her safely as she remains stranded among the rocks.
Additional personnel from the Alathur and Palakkad Fire and Rescue Services stations have been deployed to assist with the operation, officials added.
According to officials, the Palakkad district administration had imposed restrictions on tourists visiting hilly areas following heavy rainfall.
The rescued man and the stranded woman were part of a five-member group from Tamil Nadu that visited the Palakkuzhi waterfall area, reportedly unaware that restrictions were in force.
The injured tourist was shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Police have launched an investigation into how the group managed to enter the restricted area despite the ban.
