Thane: Police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have busted a syndicate that allegedly supplied mule accounts to cyber fraudsters and arrested six persons in connection with the case, an official said.
The cops have so far uncovered fraudulent transactions worth ₹57.25 crore linked to the mule accounts. A mule account is a bank or financial account used by criminals to receive, hold, and transfer illegally acquired money.
Acting on inputs, the Crime Branch Unit 4 recently carried out a raid at Mohol in Solapur district and seized three laptops, 29 mobile phones, 23 SIM cards, 155 ATM cards, 105 bank passbooks and chequebooks and ₹74,350 in cash, he said on Friday.
Further investigation showed that the mule bank accounts were linked to 96 formal cybercrime complaints registered on the central National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. A majority of these cases have been filed across Delhi, Punjab, Odisha, and Maharashtra, the official said.
Fraudulent transactions worth ₹57.25 crore have been detected through the seized mule accounts, the official said.
Six persons have been arrested for allegedly opening or arranging the bank accounts and allowing cybercriminals to use them, police said, adding that the victims were cheated through illegal online betting and gaming platforms.
A probe is underway, they said.
