Gangtok: A total of 161 people have been evacuated in West Sikkim's Gyalshing district due to an increase in landslide threat. Residents have been evacuated from Rimbi and from nearby Singlitam in the district.
Landslide threat at Rimbi in Gyalshing district
Landslide threat at Rimbi in West Sikkim’s Gyalshing district has intensified following incessant rain and flooding since September 14, prompting the district administration to evacuate 128 people from the area, officials said on Wednesday.
The residents, living in 28 houses, have been shifted to the Rimbi Gram Panchayat Kendra as a precautionary measure after fresh landslides and flooding increased the risk to settlements since Tuesday, the district administration said.
The situation is particularly vulnerable around Mandir Point, where landslides have been reported, officials said.
Debris has accumulated along the Nik Kholsa stream, with debris-laden water flowing towards Rimbi village during heavy rain and posing a threat to houses along the stream course.
"The accumulation of debris has affected the natural flow of water, raising the possibility of a sudden release of water and debris," the administration said.
The RCC bridge at Rimbi has also been washed away following the increased flow of water and debris, while the main Rimbi River has changed course and is eroding the roadside flank.
The state government is taking steps to construct a Bailey bridge at a higher location to restore connectivity after the main road was completely washed away on May 15, officials said.
The Rimbi ICDS Centre, located below the expanding landslide zone, is also flooded. The administration has advised the department concerned to examine shifting the centre to a safer location.
Evacuation from Singlitam in Gyalshing district
At nearby Singlitam, seven families comprising more than 33 people have been moved to a relief shelter after being identified as vulnerable.
The relief centre is sheltering elderly people and children, with food and other essential supplies being provided, the administration said.
The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) has urged residents of Singlitam, Rimbi and other vulnerable areas to remain alert and stay away from active landslide zones and stream courses during heavy rain.
