New Delhi: The name of late economist and former chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Bibek Debroy has appeared in the list of voters being issued notices for ‘discrepancies’ in their details furnished under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Delhi.
Debroy, who was a voter in the New Delhi Assembly constituency, died in November 2024.
His name appears in the list of 33 lakh voters being issued notices for ‘discrepancies’ in the details furnished by them through enumeration forms.
A senior poll officer said, "We are aware about his death and now his name will be excluded from the final list."
Debroy's entry was marked as ‘unmapped with last SIR’. Most voters who have been issued notices are those whose details cannot be mapped with the previous SIR exercise conducted in 2002 in Delhi.
Delhi poll officials said Debroy's name was in the list of voters being issued notices because of an instruction from the Election Commission (EC).
According to the EC instruction, all names of members of the judiciary, public representatives, holders of declared offices and personalities from the fields of arts, culture, journalism, sports and public services, earlier flagged in the electoral database, are to be included in the draft electoral rolls, said the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
The instruction was issued to ensure that necessary documents can also be collected during the period of claims and objections, it said.
"Late Bibek Debroy was part of the flagged list. As per ECI instructions, persons whose names are in the flagged list (VVIP/VIP) will be made part of the draft roll so that documents can also be collected during the claims and objections phase," said the poll officer cited above.
The booth-level officer had flagged that Debroy had died, but as per EC instructions, his name could not be deleted and is part of the draft rolls, he added.
