Former BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people in a village in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district, the local police reported on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday night in Bhonda village during a dispute over restarting a stone crusher in the area.
According to a PTI report, the dispute between Bhadana and some people of the village had been going on for some time.
Neeraj Bhardwaj, Circle Officer, Bhusawar, said Bhadana and his associate Gagan Sharma were allegedly attacked with sticks and stones.
The duo was taken to a hospital in Weir, from where Bhadana was referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur, where he died under treatment.
Police said villagers had accused Bhadana of encroaching on grazing land and carrying out illegal mining activities.
According to the police, the crusher remained closed for about a year, and efforts to restart it had led to further disagreements.
Villagers alleged that they had been staging a peaceful protest for the past 10 to 15 days against the proposed reopening of the crusher.
A PTI report cited the villagers as saying that Bhadana visited the site on Sunday evening with around 40 to 50 people and tried to evict them.
