New Delhi: All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora was released by Delhi Police on Saturday morning after being taken into preventive detention on Friday evening ahead of the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ rally in the national capital.

Bora was released after the completion of formalities under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act, while Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader Abhijeet Dipke was arrested in a fresh case under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), police said.

After her release, Bora criticised Delhi Police and the Union Government, describing the detentions as “illegal”. She also demanded that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be stopped and called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and imprisonment.

“I was detained at Mandi House and kept here (at the police station) the whole night, until 5 am. Why are you (police) carrying out these illegal detentions? These things have been happening in this country for a long time, and this movement has clearly shown that such detentions are taking place. It has brought these kinds of detentions to light. They claim that they adhere to law and order and go by the book, but none of that is happening,” Bora told PTI Videos.

Bora also questioned the detention of women after sunset, citing legal safeguards under the BNSS.

“Furthermore, there is a new narrative being pushed, one of chaos and anarchy. What kind of chaos and anarchy? The one you unleashed in Central Delhi? The people of Delhi cannot even breathe a sigh of relief; whichever route they take to get to work, they find it blocked. You are spreading chaos and anarchy across the nation,” she said.

The AISA president demanded the immediate release of all protesters who had been detained or arrested, including Dipke.

“During this movement, they (police) have been detaining people illegally in the evening and releasing them the next morning or evening. We do not understand which law allows these kinds of detentions. The protesters who have been detained should be released, including Abhijeet Dipke. The sort of curfew that has been imposed in central Delhi should also end,” she said.

Bora also called for action against Gyanesh Kumar and an end to the SIR exercise.

“Everyone, from Gyanesh Kumar to the BJP government, should shed their arrogance. Gyanesh Kumar should resign or be impeached and jailed, and the SIR should be stopped so that the people of Delhi and India can breathe a sigh of relief,” she added.

On Friday, Bora was detained at Mandi House, while Dipke was detained at Jhandewalan as they were heading towards Connaught Place, police sources said.

AISA alleged that Bora was moved between different locations in Delhi for around 5 hours after her detention before being taken to RK Puram police station.

The organisation further claimed that lawyers who reached the police station around midnight were not allowed to meet her. It also alleged that police had not clarified when she would be released and had refused to provide her with medicines despite knowing that she had been unwell for several days.

According to police, around 150 people were detained to maintain law and order and ensure smooth traffic movement.

Security personnel cordoned off Central Park in Connaught Place, with Rapid Action Force personnel deployed inside and additional forces stationed in the surrounding area.
