Ghaziabad: Officials said that one labourer was killed and five others were injured after a slab of the roof of an under-construction house collapsed in Ghaziabad's Modinagar locality on Saturday.

The deceased labourer was identified as Gauri Shankar alias Chhotu, 32. He died after being buried under the rubble in Sikri Kala.

One person died while five others have been rescued after the incident at the construction site, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari told media persons.

He said Modinagar police and other emergency-response forces quickly joined the rescue work, and credited locals for assisting in the initial relief efforts.

The owner of the under-construction structure, Surendra, is being interrogated about the nature of the construction, the DCP said, adding that further investigation was underway.

Speaking to ANI after reaching the site, Modinagar MLA Manju Shiwach called it "a very unfortunate incident."

"A concrete slab (linter) collapsed. The slab was being poured using a capsule; whether the shuttering shifted or some other factor was involved is a matter for investigation. Sadly, the labourers were working, even on the day of Diwali, hoping to earn their daily wages, when the slab collapsed. Six or seven labourers were present; unfortunately, one of them died after being trapped under the debris," the MLA said.

Police said the injured were out of danger and recovering in hospital from minor injuries.

"Two of the injured are hospitalised in Modinagar, while two others are in district hospital," they added.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the building collapse and expressed sorrow at the labourer's death. He directed officials to ensure that the injured get proper treatment on priority at the hospitals.
