New York: German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine and urged nations committed to the rules-based international order to strengthen support for the United Nations during what he described as one of its most challenging periods.
Speaking to reporters outside UN headquarters in New York, Pistorius delivered a direct message to Putin: "Mr. President, stop that war."
Pistorius said his US visit had focused on both military cooperation and support for international institutions, citing talks at the Pentagon with Pete Hegseth, closer coordination on Russia, and the transfer of the first F-35 aircraft.
"The rules-based international order is facing perhaps the greatest pressure in the history of the United Nations," he said, adding that peace and security required both strong defense capabilities and diplomacy.
He said countries with the influence and commitment to uphold that order had a special responsibility to help the UN navigate current challenges and emerge stronger in support of global peace and security.
Pistorius also stressed the need to strengthen military capabilities while backing international organizations and multilateral cooperation.
