The United Nations urged de-escalation and protection of civilians in Yemen on Friday, saying monitors had documented 28 civilians killed and 82 injured since fighting intensified in August.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the casualties occurred in 31 incidents across Taiz, Al-Hodeidah and Marib. Insecurity and access restrictions hampered verification, meaning the actual toll was likely higher.
“Every effort must be made to prevent further loss of life,” he said.
Dujarric also cited reports that thousands seeking to leave Yemen were stranded by insecurity and fuel shortages. Others had reached Djibouti in small vessels, some leaving relatives behind.
Inside Yemen, the UN and its partners reached more than 11,000 displaced households with emergency assistance between August 1 and September 16.
But needs continued to outpace relief efforts, constrained by funding shortages and access difficulties. More than 18,600 households were displaced during that period, according to UN humanitarian officials.
