Dramatic footage showed the moment a Panama-flagged bulk carrier collided with a Chinese fishing vessel off the coast of Singapore on Thursday.
The 229-metre (750-foot) bulk carrier First Margaux struck the 49-metre (160-foot) Luqing Yuanyu 108, ship-tracking data cited by The Maritime Executive showed.
Both ships left anchorage near Singapore around the same time Thursday morning and were travelling westbound in the same lane of the traffic separation scheme — a routing system intended to prevent collisions in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
Reuters confirmed the location and date of the footage, as well as the identities of the two ships using ship-tracking data. The footage, filmed from the fishing vessel, showed the collision and the ship tilting afterwards. The Panama Maritime Authority confirmed the incident in a statement released on September 20.
