US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that five men arrested near a US-used air base in Britain had been looking to do "big damage" and that US and British authorities had been investigating them for some time.
"The arrest in the UK was fantastic, working with Britain. It was an amazing job," Trump told reporters as he arrived in Chicago.
"We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort. And working with the British worked out great."
Trump did not elaborate on who had been investigating the men or provide evidence for his assertion. Asked by a reporter whether the suspects were migrants, Trump appeared to misunderstand the question and replied: "It may have been Scotland Yard, I don't know."
British police arrested the five men near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosive and terrorism offenses after receiving a tip-off that three suspicious vehicles appeared to be traveling toward the military airfield in the early hours of Sunday.
The base in western England has been used by the United States to strike Iranian missile sites that were attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
