As world leaders wrapped up the UN General Assembly, where calls for a ceasefire and an end to the Russia-Ukraine war remained high on the diplomatic agenda, fighting continued on the ground. Russia and Ukraine reported overnight strikes on military, energy and infrastructure targets, underscoring the gap between diplomatic efforts and the continuing violence.
Russia said Monday that its forces struck Ukrainian logistics and communications centers, port infrastructure and vessels overnight Sunday into Monday. In contrast, Ukraine said it had hit Russian defense industry enterprises, oil facilities and other targets.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces struck data-processing centres at two major enterprises in Kyiv, which it claimed provided internet services and stored intelligence data for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The ministry also said Russian forces targeted military fuel infrastructure in Kyiv and facilities at the Vasylkiv military airfield in Kyiv Oblast.
In the southern Odesa region, Russian forces reportedly struck a large ship-repair yard at Izmail port and a Ukrainian State Border Guard post located there. The ministry also said Russian forces targeted a logistics centre in the Odesa region that had previously stored Ukrainian military supplies.
Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Monday that Ukraine must pay the price for attacking Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that Ukrainian forces had struck two defense industry facilities in Russia's Tula and Voronezh regions and oil facilities in Krasnodar Krai.
Zelensky said Ukrainian forces also struck targets in Russia’s Kaluga and Oryol regions that were being used to launch drone attacks on Ukraine, as well as Russian troops in the Bryansk region.
He said Russian forces, meanwhile, launched a wave of aerial attacks across Ukraine in the early hours of Monday, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure, including a high-rise residential building in the Kharkiv region.
