Brazil: Civil society organisations and social movements held a protest outside Meta’s headquarters in São Paulo on Monday, demanding that the company clarify allegations of interference in Brazil’s elections.
The protest comes amid a dispute over whether Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, treated the two candidates equally, adding to tensions in the final days of the campaign.
Lula’s coalition said his Instagram account and posts had been restricted. Local newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported internal Meta messages acknowledging those restrictions and stating that the platform had recommended Bolsonaro’s profile and WhatsApp channel to users.
Meta said it had experienced global technical glitches but denied any political bias. “Any suggestion that Meta favours one side is false,” the company said.
Lula will face Bolsonaro in a runoff on 25 October, following the senator’s stronger-than-expected performance in the first-round vote earlier this month.
