Sudan: A drone strike on Amiet Market in the disputed Abyei region along the Sudan-South Sudan border killed at least 153 people on Monday, with the death toll expected to rise, a local official said, as the attack destroyed stalls and restaurants and added to casualties from Sudan’s ongoing war.

Burned-out stalls, ash and debris covered the market on Wednesday, two days after the strike. One trader told Reuters that the attack had completely destroyed the restaurant and tea stall that provided an income for her and her children.

The strike pushed the death toll from attacks in recent days to more than 250, underscoring the toll of airstrikes in Sudan’s war, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Yohana Akol Ngor, caretaker information minister in Abyei, told Reuters on Tuesday that the death toll from Monday’s attack had risen to 153 from 73 and was likely to increase further.
