Karak: Gunmen opened fire inside a church during a funeral in Jordan on Friday, killing seven people and wounding 28 others, authorities said.

The shooting took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) south of the capital, Amman.

Government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani provided the number of dead and the wounded. Security services were investigating the shooting. Karak is home to a minority Christian population.

Security forces were pursuing the suspects, the station added. It said two gunmen got out of a vehicle and opened fire during a funeral procession at the Hamoud church in Karak. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack and Jordanian authorities did not say who was responsible.

Such attacks are extremely rare in Jordan, which is relatively stable but has been increasingly targeted by Iranian attacks this year since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February.

Christians make up a minority of Jordan's population though the country is home to several biblical sites that attract Christian pilgrims from around the world.

In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in Karak, including at a Crusader castle popular with tourists, killing 10 people, including seven officers, and wounding dozens. Jordanian security forces killed the gunmen after a long standoff
