Even those who are conscious about their lunch and dinner often ditch their diet control when it comes to snack time. Most of the time, this is mainly because of the lack of healthy snacking options. So, here is one quick and healthy traditional Kerala snack recipe.

Ingredients

  • Bay leaves – 4 (big ones)
  • Wheat flour – 1 cup
  • Ripe banana – 1
  • Grated coconut – ½ cup
  • Grated jaggery – ¼ cup
  • Black sesame seeds – 1 pinch
  • Ghee – 1 tablespoon
  • Cardamom powder – 1 tablespoon
  • Dry ginger powder – 1 pinch
  • Salt – 1 pinch

Preparation

Into a wide, deep bowl, add wheat flour, grated jaggery, ripe banana, grated coconut, black sesame seeds, cardamom powder, dry ginger powder, salt, and ghee. Mash everything well with clean hands until you get a dough similar to chapati dough. If the dough is watery, add a little more wheat flour and mix well.

Now take small portions of the dough and roll them inside the bay leaves. Secure the end either with the leaf's stem portion or with an eerkili (midrib of the coconut leaf).

Now place them in a steamer and steam for 10 minutes.

Take them out and enjoy with black tea or ginger tea.
