Kannur: The death of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy at Baby Memorial Hospital here on July 10 has sparked a row after his family alleged medical negligence.

The deceased is Devansh Shaurya, son of Sooraj and Vijisha from Eramam in Kannur district. The child was admitted to the private hospital on July 5 for treatment of a lip injury.

According to the family, the child became unresponsive after being administered anaesthesia. He later died while undergoing treatment on ventilator support.

The family alleged that medical negligence led to the child's death.

The child's uncle, Ajith, told Reporter TV that the hospital authorities did not inform the family about the risks generally associated with administering general anaesthesia.

"He was taken to the hospital to get his lip injury stitched. However, the wound had already begun to heal without requiring stitches," Ajith said.

Payyannur Police have registered a case against Dr Anjali Poduval, an anaesthetist at Baby Memorial Hospital, following the family's complaint alleging medical negligence.

The doctor has been booked under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts endangering the life or personal safety of others.

Responding to the allegations, the hospital issued a statement declaring that the child suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest immediately after the administration of anaesthesia. The hospital argued that complications can occur even after administering an appropriate dosage of anaesthesia and following proper medical protocol.
