New Delhi: The NEET paper leak protests intensified on Thursday, spreading from Jantar Mantar to Parliament and several states, as the Union government renewed its offer for talks and announced fast-track courts for paper leak cases. Protest organisers rejected the proposal, reiterating their demand for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.

The Opposition stepped up protests in Parliament and on the streets, while demonstrations spread to several states. Heavy security remained in central Delhi, and police began identifying those allegedly involved in recent violence. Activist Sonam Wangchuk urged protesters to remain peaceful.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has called for a nationwide peaceful protest on July 24 through a post on X, over the police brutality against students during the July 20 protests in Jantar Mantar. AAP has also extended their support to the nationwide protest.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Wednesday also alleged that internet services were shut down around Jantar Mantar where its supporters have been staging a sit-in, and questioned if the government was preparing for another police crackdown on the agitation.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police denied claims by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal that it was planning a crackdown on the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar.

  3. Violence erupts during NEET protests across Bihar

    Protests over the alleged NEET paper leak turned violent across several districts of Bihar, including Jehanabad, Darbhanga, Katihar and Begusarai, leaving many students and at least 14 police personnel injured. Police resorted to aerial firing, baton charges and other crowd-control measures after protesters allegedly breached barricades, pelted stones and damaged public property. Authorities said several arrests had been made, while efforts were underway to identify others involved in the violence. District officials appealed to students to continue their protests through peaceful and lawful means, warning that those responsible for violence would face strict legal action.

  4. Bar Council urges professionals to guide students, maintain peace

    The Bar Council of India (BCI) appealed to lawyers, teachers, journalists and other professionals to engage with students and encourage peaceful, lawful protest amid the ongoing agitation over the alleged NEET paper leak. BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra alleged that anti-national forces and foreign adversaries were attempting to exploit the protests to destabilise the country through misinformation and violence. He urged intellectuals to educate students about constitutional values, responsible use of social media and democratic means of expression. The BCI also called on professional bodies and educational institutions to organise awareness programmes promoting peace, digital responsibility and public order.

    Activist Sonam Wangchuk appealed to supporters to maintain peace during the ongoing protests, saying demonstrations at Jantar Mantar had remained peaceful despite reports of violence elsewhere. Wangchuk urged demonstrators not to retaliate, saying their response should be one of peace and restraint, regardless of any provocation.

    Union minister Jitendra Singh urged the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to accept the government's offer for another round of talks, saying the group had been invited at least four times in the past 24 hours. He said the discussions would be led by Union Health Minister J P Nadda and could take place either at Nadda's official residence or office, depending on the protesters' preference. Singh said the government was ready to discuss the NEET issue and all related concerns for as long as required, stressing that dialogue was the only way to reach a solution. He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assurance that students' interests remain a priority and referred to the decision to establish fast-track courts for paper leak cases. Singh appealed to the protesting students to participate in the talks and contribute suggestions for reforms.

  35. SFI protests across Kerala in support of CJP agitation in Delhi

    SFI, the student wing of the CPI(M) on Thursday held protests across Kerala, including a march to the Lok Bhavan here, in support of the CJP agitation in Delhi and the alleged police brutality there against students.

    The protest march by the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists to the Lok Bhavan here was inaugurated by Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Pinarayi Vijayan.

    Hundreds of SFI activists shouted slogans against the Centre and demanded the resignation of Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan.

    They tried to climb over the barricades set up by the police and faced the water cannons, refusing to back off from their attempts to reach the Lok Bhavan.

    Thousands of SFI activists protested Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur and Kasaragod, among others, and faced off against several rounds of water cannons used by the police to disperse them, according to visuals on TV channels. - PTI

    Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday accused the Opposition of attaching pre-conditions and trying to run away from a debate on the NEET paper leak issue.

    As the Opposition insisted on the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Rijiju told the Lok Sabha that during the discussion, the government would also like to put across its point of view on the matter.

    He said Opposition members can speak for as long as they want and the discussion can take place even for two days.

    Further, Rijiju said the date and duration of the discussion in both the Houses can be decided by the Opposition.

    According to him, the government has approached the Congress and other Opposition parties on having the debate.

    Rijiju made these remarks after the House reconvened at noon following an earlier adjournment.

    Amid the ruckus over the NEET paper leak issue, the proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm.

  37. PM finally taken notice, now all focus on him: CJP

    CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka welcomed the prime minister's response but said it came after nearly one-and-a-half months of protests and did not answer the central question behind repeated paper leaks.
    "The first thing is that it is good that after one-and-a-half months of protests, the prime minister has finally taken notice. Perhaps his foreign visits are over and he has returned to India, which is a good thing," Ranka said.
    "But what punishment are you imposing after the paper leak has already taken place? That is not going to solve the problem of paper leaks. The real question is why paper leaks are happening in the first place. That question must be answered," he said.
    "Applying ointment after an injury is one thing, but the real fight is about preventing the injury from happening in the first place. The injury keeps happening because the people running the system are neither accountable nor competent. Therefore, these measures are not sufficient by any means," he said.
    Ranka claimed that public anger over the issue was now increasingly being directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with more protesters raising slogans against him.
    "We will not leave this place until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns," he said.
    "…A large number of people are here with passion and determination, and everyone is demanding his resignation. But as the days pass, the issue is no longer confined to Dharmendra Pradhan," Ranka said.
    Ranka alleged that the agitation had widened beyond the demand for the education minister's resignation and was now increasingly targeting the Union Government's leadership.
    "The focus is now shifting towards the prime minister. If you listen to the slogans here, you will find that people's anger is increasingly being directed at him over why he is not listening to them. The government should understand this because people have now started asking questions directly to the Prime Minister," he said.

    The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement on action against paper leaks did not address the issue of accountability and reiterated its demand for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.

    Modi, in a post on X on Thursday morning, announced setting up of fast-track courts to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved in paper leaks, and said, "nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth".

    Reacting to the prime minister's post on X, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke shared an image of Pradhan carrying the caption, "Hi, my name is nothing", while the CJP posted, "Dharmendra Pradhan Must Resign."

  40. RS adjourned till 12 noon as Oppn insists on Pradhan's resignation before NEET discussion

    Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Thursday as Opposition parties continued to insist on Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation before starting a discussion on the NEET paper leak issue.

    Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was ready for a discussion on NEET on Thursday itself and the Opposition should not put any condition for holding the debate.

    However, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said Pradhan has to resign first before any discussion on the issue can take place.

  47. 16 Delhi Metro station to remain shut till further notice

    The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said that 16 stations, including Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk and Supreme Court, will remain shut from 7.30 am on Thursday till further notice. However, the interchange facility shall remain available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat.

  48. CJP vows to continue peaceful protest

    CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said that the students who joined them would continue the protest peacefully.

    "I spoke with Sonam Wangchuk several times today. The conclusion was that this peaceful protest should remain peaceful. He has also publicly appealed to all protesters to maintain peace and conduct this protest in the right manner… In previous protests in this country, anti-social elements planted by the ruling regime infiltrate and derail the entire protest, then ultimately, those protesting peacefully are blamed, and this should not happen," he said.

    He also declared that union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation is non-negotiable.

  49. Stone pelting near protest site leaves cops injured

    At least two assistant commissioners of police (ACPs) and four personnel were injured in a stone-pelting incident by protesters near Jantar Mantar on Wednesday evening, police sources said.

    They said that many "anti-social" elements have entered the protest site.

    "They are not even listening to the organisers (CJP) and are pelting stones at personnel," they added.
