An explosion reportedly occurred at the MRPL (Mangalore Refinery Petrochemicals Ltd) near Jokatte, Mangaluru on Wednesday.
One person suffered an injury and was shifted to hospital, the MRPL said, adding that he is out of danger. Footage on social media shows thick black smoke billowing from a plant of the refinery.
According to news agency PTI, residents experienced 'tremor-like' sensations during the explosion.
According to a company statement shared by PTI, a fire broke out at a high-pressure unit following a rupture of a cold separator in the Coker Hydrotreater Unit.
The MRPL statement said the affected unit has been isolated and the fire was brought under control.
MRPL is a subsidiary of the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) that owns and operates the 15 million tonnes-a-year oil refinery.
