Delhi Police have handed a stick to opposition parties to beat them virtually after a posse of policemen and women staged a protest outside the force's headquarters on Monday.
As per multiple reports, over 60 personnel in uniform held placards and raised slogans under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Manasvi Vashisht.
They were demanding the cancellation of transfers of Vashisht and Shahdara Station House Officer (SHO) Arun Kumar in connection with an alleged confrontation with lawyers.
The protesting personnel turned down appeals from Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police, Sachin Sharma, who urged them to stand down and step inside the headquarters for a meeting. "We're a disciplined force.. don't act as protesters," Sachin Sharma told the protesting police personnel in the presence of mediapersons.
Odd timing of the protest
The timing of the cop protest is striking as in the recent months, students and supporters of opposition parties had been dealt harshly by the Delhi Police for staging agitations in the national capital.
The Delhi Police had used a combination of barricading, detentions and lathicharging of protesters who participated in the protests, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
The Delhi Police infamously denotified Jantar Mantar, the traditional site for public protests in New Delhi, besides issuing prohibitory orders (Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita) to deter protesters.

What's the cop protest about?
On October 23, advocate Lalit Bansal allegedly sustained a head injury during a scuffle with policemen at the Shahdara Police Station. ACP Vashisht and SHO Kumar were transferred after lawyers of the district court demanded action against them and launched an indefinite strike.
On October 28, the Delhi Police transferred Vashisht from his post as sub-divisional police officer in Gandhi Nagar to the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC). SHO Kumar was transferred to the security unit.
The protesting cops are accusing the lawyers of hooliganism. "Kale coat wale gunde," (hooligans in black coat), Vashisht said in public during the protest.
He said the protesting policemen have requested their seniors to provide them a platform to present their views and have submitted a formal application in this regard.
"We have taken a stand because it is necessary to raise our voice against the hooliganism that the police are facing and the security problems arising inside police stations," Vashisht said.
