Kochi: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has organised a protest in Keralam’s Kochi as part of its nationwide agitation seeking the withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and actor-turned-activist Prakash Raj are expected to attend the event, titled 'Jantar Mantar at Kochi', on Saturday.

The protest march will begin at Marine Drive at 4 pm and proceed to Rajendra Maidan, where a public meeting will be held, the organisers said.

According to CJP activists, the event is expected to draw a large number of supporters, particularly young people, from across Keralam.

CJP national leader Afreen Nawaz and its South India in-charge, Vijay Reddy Mallangi, will also participate.

On Friday, Dipke and Raj posted videos on social media appealing to people to join the protest.

The organisers said the programme was being held to oppose the SIR exercise and demand its withdrawal.

Kochi City Police Special Branch officials said CJP activists had recently met the Deputy Commissioner of Kochi City Police to discuss arrangements for the programme. Although the march was expected to remain peaceful, adequate police personnel would be deployed to prevent any untoward incidents, they added.

CJP launched its agitation against the SIR after a national daily published an investigation alleging that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had taken key decisions, including the decision to conduct the SIR, without consulting the other two members of the Election Commission.

The party's protests in Delhi had earlier led to confrontations with the police over its attempts to hold demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Police had reportedly restricted access to the site after it was denotified as a protest venue.

CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were arrested for entering Jantar Mantar. Dipke was subsequently detained ahead of a Tiranga March announced by the party in Delhi.

Recently, the Delhi Police Crime Branch questioned CJP leaders in connection with cases related to protests held in the national capital.
