Residents near Uttarakhand's Kali River alerted as water accumulates in Nepal's Chameliya River
The Pithoragarh district administration in Uttarakhand has alerted residents near the Kali River in the Jhulaghat area to avoid approaching the riverbank, following reports of water accumulating in Nepal's Chameliya River due to a landslide, an official said on Saturday.
Pithoragarh District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Singh Mahar said the alert was issued after receiving reports that a massive landslide had obstructed the flow of the Chameliya River -- a tributary of the Kali River near Gethigada village -- causing a large volume of water to pool up.
He said the information regarding this situation was conveyed by the Chief District Officers of Nepal's Baitadi and Darchula districts. - PTI

India-Nepal teams continue rescue mission at Chilime tunnel
India and Nepal rescue teams are continuing a rescue mission at the Chilime tunnel, removing heavy debris, water and mud from inside the tunnel, Ambassador of India to Nepal Naveen Srivastava said on Saturday.
In a post on X, Srivastava said, "The India & Nepal rescue team continue to remove heavy debris, water & mud, which in the interior has reached close to the roof of the Chilime tunnel."He said work was also underway to construct an access road from nearby Syafrubesi to the tunnel portal to facilitate the rescue operation. He further elaborated that, given the "difficult terrain" and "narrow valley", heavy helicopter usage is not possible.
"This would allow heavy machinery to be taken deep in the tunnel. In parallel work is also underway to make access road from nearby Syafrubesi to tunnel portal. Given the difficult terrain & narrow valley heavy helicopter usage is not possible. Access road would allow an excavator to be brought to the site and assist rescue operations," Srivastava said. - ANI -
DNA collection underway to identify bodies
The Nepal authorities have opened centres to take samples for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing to identify people missing in the Bhotekoshi River flood.
Earlier, family members of the victims were compelled to go to Kathmandu from Rasuwa and Nuwakot to give samples.
To make it easier for families affected by the flood, a sample collection center has been set up in Bidur and Kathmandu informed Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr. Damodar Paudel.
He said that they believe taking samples from family members of missing persons for testing will help ascertain the identity of the bodies recovered from the flood-affected sites. Police have so far collected 2,272 DNA samples -- 1,260 from bodies and 1,012 from relatives -- as they try to establish the identities of those killed in the disaster, The Kathmandu Post reported. - PTI
