Mendhar, Jammu: All schools including private and government run were ordered shut in Poonch district on Tuesday due to heavy rain and swelling rivers and nallahs, officials said. The severe weather caused overflowing drains and blocked roads, including the Poonch-Mendhar road.
Heavy rains have been lashing since the night of August 31 and continuing till September 1. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier warned of heavy downpours for 48 hours.
The decision was announced as a precautionary measure in a notice issued by the chief education officer.
The situation in the district is being closely monitored, officials said.
