New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has seized 3,279.57 metric tonnes of food products valued at an estimated Rs 81.80 crore and suspended 1,133 food licences during a nationwide inspection drive conducted between September 1 and November 5, 2026. The drive covered more than 56,000 food establishments.

The enforcement operation, carried out across States and Union Territories in coordination with State Food Safety Authorities, also led to the cancellation of 52 licences, the sealing of 314 establishments and the initiation of 410 prosecutions, the FSSAI said.

In a series of posts on X, the food safety regulator said it had inspected 56,431 establishments and issued 10,047 improvement notices as part of the nationwide exercise.

The authority also collected 43,939 food samples, of which 23,648 had been analysed. Among the samples tested, 2,273 were found to be non-compliant with prescribed food safety standards.

The seized products included edible oils, milk and paneer, sweets, khoya, ghee, bakery products, chocolates, ice creams, namkeen, packaged foods and festive hampers.

Over 56,000 establishments inspected

Highlighting the scale of the operation, the FSSAI said it had carried out "rigorous checks on over 56,000 food establishments" and taken "decisive action against substandard practices". The measures, it added, were aimed at maintaining "uncompromising safety standards".

The enforcement campaign covered various food businesses and products. The action ranged from issuing improvement notices and suspending licences to cancelling licences, sealing establishments and initiating legal proceedings.

The authority said it would continue to work with State Food Safety Authorities to ensure "greater adherence to prescribed food safety standards across the food ecosystem".

The findings highlight the scale of enforcement measures undertaken during the festive-season campaign. Continued inspections and monitoring are expected to remain central to the FSSAI's efforts to strengthen compliance with food safety regulations among businesses.
